Following the recent visit of Myanmar’s President U Thein Sein to Brussels, the EU is committed to organize a Task Force in Myanmar/Burma on 14 and 15 November 2013 that will bring together political and business leaders, with the aim of supporting and fostering the transition process, and drawing on the full range of the EU’s resources in both the public and private sector. This is a powerful signal of European re-engagement in that country, which will be greatly to our mutual benefit. Our cooperation with Myanmar/Burma forms part of our deepening engagement with the dynamic ASEAN region. This is why Vice- President Tajani has decided to organise also Missions for Growth to Vietnam and Thailand at the same occasion. The mission of Vice-President Tajani to Myanmar is a joint mission under the umbrella of the EU-Myanmar Task Force chaired by the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton. In addition to Baroness Ashton the visit of Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, responsible for Development, is also confirmed.

This mission has three main objectives:

  1. to support and foster Myanmar’s economic and democratic transition process;

  2. to reinforce EU-Myanmar development co-operation;

  3. to promote growth and business opportunities on both sides.

Vietnam / Thailand

At the occasion of the organisation of the Task Force in Myanmar, Vice – President Tajani will also organise Missions for Growth to Vietnam on 12 and 13 November 2013 and to Thailand on 16 November 2013, two countries of the dynamic ASEAN region with which the EU is currently deepening its relations. These Missions for Growth have three main objectives:

  1. to promote innovation and sustainable and inclusive growth in the EU and in the visited countries;

  2. to help EU companies and in particular SMEs to operate in the ASEAN region;

  3. to promote our industry in targeted sectors by participating in matchmaking events with local entrepreneurs.

Tajani will meet representatives of institutions and economic stakeholders and sign several agreements.

European Commission DG Enterprise and Industry is willing to give the opportunity to 20 journalists to join the Vice President on this trip.
